Your Greatest Treasure
What is that one thing? That thing you’d do anything to have. Maybe no one knows, or maybe everyone knows. Whatever it is, think about it, dwell on it for a moment. What would you do if you had it? What joy would it bring you and what part of you would be fulfilled?
Naturally, as you age, these answers change. Remember when McDonald’s monopoly first came out and all the hype that came with it? I so desperately wanted to win a Dodge Viper. I mean, come on; how cool would it be to have a car like that as a 12-year-old😂!?! I had scale models, posters on my wall and constantly wanted to get extra hash browns for more Monopoly pieces. I would have given anything to get that winning piece.
What was it for you? That thing you obsessed over, that you’d give anything for?
That object or thing that would make you grin from ear to ear and rejoice?
Thinking of it? Okay, now take your desire and fill in this blank with it:
The Kingdom of Heaven is like _________(a Dodge Viper). You found a way to get it, so you gave away everything, sold it all, liquidated every asset to obtain it.
Here is what Jesus said in Matthew 13:44: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”
Friends, what is the Kingdom of Heaven worth? What benefit can we experience by obtaining it? How can it fulfill us and bring us indescribable, ear-to-ear grinning joy?
Jesus’s point is that the gospel is the ultimate good, it’s better than your deepest wants. There is a certain amount of desperation that I read. The man was looking for treasure. He was hunting for it (even in someone else’s field) and we don’t know for how long either. When he found it, there wasn’t hesitation, only ingenuity to rightly purchase the rights to the treasure.
Questions:
Do you see the gospel as a treasure?
What have you given up?
Is the treasure still buried in the field?
Many of you have given up everything, you are sold out and possess the treasure. I bless you to continue to see the value of what you’ve attained and bless you with the desire to give it away. Don’t keep it buried, expose it and share it with everyone. There is no bottom to this chest. The riches are unending. The depth of joy found from having and giving the gospel is far greater than the joy of winning a sweepstakes prize from McDonalds!!!
